2009-2010 Season
Celebrating the American Spirit. At a time when our country is persevering through another economic challenge, PYT forges ahead with a season celebrating the American Spirit. Led by the courage of the Federal Theatre Project of the 1930s, PYT looks to produce “theater so vital to community life” that it creates a modern snapshot of our diverse communities set against the backdrop of our unique history. It’s Theatre about the People. Theatre for the People. Theatre by the People. A Celebration.
MAGGIE MAGALITA
by Wendy Kesselman
Maggie Magalita kicks off the Mainstage season. It’s a heartfelt play about a 14 year old Hispanic immigrant, Maggie, who lives with her working mother in a New York City studio apartment. Maggie is trying hard to blend into the American lifestyle and she's succeeding. But she's also forgetting the beauty and pride of her heritage. Grandmother comes from the old country and upsets Magalita's plans: she just can't blend! When Maggie's American boyfriend comes over for what turns out to be a very non American dinner, Maggie begins to understand something very precious: herself.

Maggie Magalita is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

PINOCCHIO
by Yasha Frank
Yasha Frank’s Pinocchio is Pennsylvania Youth Theatre’s inspiration for the 2009-2010 season. This freely adapted classic by one of the central figures in the Federal Theatre Project during the Works Progress Administration years in the 1930s is packed full of amazement, circus arts, original music, and pure adventure. As Pinocchio is confronted with the challenge of becoming a real boy, the messages of giving and of hope are reinforced for audiences through the difficult decisions they help him make.
